What’s the Difference Between an LCD TV and an LED TV? Nothing has enhanced television viewing as much as the technological advances seen in LCD (Liquid- Crystal Display) and LED (Light Emitting Diode) television sets. Technically, an LED television is an LCD, but with LED backlighting. To eliminate what could have been confusion for the buying public, the market collectively decided to call them LED televisions.
That said, standard LCD televisions and LED televisions are different products, with LEDs being the next generation of LCD televisions. Along with excellent picture quality, LED and LCD televisions provide very good stock sound, the ability to connect multiple external devices such as game consoles and DVD/Blu- ray players, as well as a myriad of other special functions that are make- and model- specific. Since the arrival of LCD and LED televisions a decade or so ago, there has been a debate about which one provides the best picture and sound quality for the best possible price. While it might seem evident that the LED would be the obvious choice because it is newer technology, some consumers find that they prefer what the LCD TV has to offer. This guide will take a look at both LED and LCD televisions, pointing out the benefits and limitations of each type of television. Additionally, the guide will discuss where to shop for LED and LCD televisions, and how to search for LCD and LED TVs on e. Bay. How an LCD Television Works.
LCD television screens are made up of liquid- crystal gel sandwiched between two panes of polarized glass. The key features of LCD televisions offer is the reduced physical depth of the device in comparison to older cathode ray tube (CRT) and plasma televisions, while at the same time offering much larger screens with higher picture resolution. When you power on the television, the electric current passes through the liquid- crystal display, altering its structure. The liquid- crystal molecules coil and uncoil.
This creates a shuttering effect, whereby light is either allowed to pass through or not. This variation in light and dark on the screen, is what the viewer perceives as images.
Unlike plasma TVs, the liquid- crystal does not create its own light. It requires another light source. In the case of LCD TVs, the screen is lit by fluorescent tubes. How an LED Television Works. As stated in the introduction, an LED TV is just a new generation of LCD TV.
The difference, is that an LED TV is not lit using fluorescent tubes, but rather a series of light emitting diodes (LEDs). There are three basic types of LED televisions, and each has its own specific format. LED Type. Main Identifying Features. White Edge LEDUses a special diffusion panel and with white LEDs around the edges of the screen to disperse light evenly behind the screen. Full LED Arrays. LED arrays are placed behind the screen and controlled collectively to disperse light behind the screen. Local Dimming LEDAn array of dynamic LEDs can be controlled individually or in groups to obtain an evenly adjusted light pattern.
The various backlighting systems used by LED televisions offer different viewing experiences. LED televisions produce the blackest blacks, by switching off the LEDs, or vibrant colors by turning them on, but will be affected by the type of backlighting configuration used. While they all provide excellent viewing, the way the display is lit differs between LED configurations.
Full LED arrays use RGB (red, green, blue) arrays that have razor- sharp spectral peaks that when used in combination with LCD panel filters reduce color blurring and intensify RGB to eliminate white LED washout. White edge LED backlighting is similar to LCD displays and limit RGB display. They are less expensive than other formats.
Finally, local dimming LED backlight displays are not highly represented in the commercial domestic television market, and are most often found in professional settings such as television and film post production because of their ability to dim specific LEDs to enhance or diminish certain parts of the picture. Comparing LCD and LED- Backlit Televisions. There are few physical differences between LED and LCD televisions. Screen thickness is the most obvious difference.
LED TVs are thinner than LCD screens. Screen sizes for both are the same and both offer multiple mounting options (with the proper mounting hardware), and most models offer a number of auxiliary ports to connect multiple receivers, games consoles, and DVD/Blu- ray players. The table below compares LCD TVs and LED TVs.

XWhile it might appear that LEDs have a significant advantage over their LCD counterparts, the differences are not that stark, since afterall they are both LCD televisions and the addition of LED technology is, in reality, just an advancement in LCD television technology. For example, while LEDs have an advantage of having a slimmer profile measurement, the difference is only about one- half an inch or less.
Other differences with respect to power usage, lifespan, color range are slight. Price is the biggest difference. LCDs are older technology than LEDs and so the newer the tech the higher the price, but only slightly higher. The future of these television will be that LCDs without LED backlighting will fade from the market just as CRT and plasma televisions have faded to make room for LCDs. By then there will most likely be another form of technology (still in development) and they will be replaced as well.
Shopping for an LCD or LED Television. When the time comes to buy a new LCD or LED television, the first thing that you need to do is decide on the screen size. It is the size of the room that will determine the size of the screen. This is because every screen size has an optimal viewing distance. If the screen is too big for a room, viewers will be sitting too close, and the experience will be like sitting in the front row of a movie theater.
If it is too small, viewers will not be able to enjoy the immersive effect of a high- definition Blu- ray movie. To determine the right size screen for your media room, man cave, or family room, measure the distance from the where the TV is likely to be positioned to where the viewers will be seated. The table below lists viewing distances and corresponding screen sizes.
Viewing Distance. Best Screen Size.
Regardless of the type of TV, the choice of screen size is very important. Once you decide what size you are going to buy, go online and browse the different manufacturers’ websites and compare models in that size. When comparing televisions, you should consider: Price. Web Access. Satellite Ready. HDMI Ready. Add- on Device Ports (DVD, Game COnsole, etc.)Once you’ve compared TVs online, make a list and rate the TVs, with one being the best and five being the least favorite.
Then go to local retail department stores or electronics stores and take a look at the models that you have listed, and give them a thorough inspection. Talk to the sales associate and get as much information as you can.
Before you buy, go back home and go online and search around for deals on the set you have chosen. While you are online, check out the online classified and merchandise auction sites like e. Bay. Searching for LCD or LED TVs on e.
Bay. To find LCD and LED televisions on e. Bay, go to the homepage and select . When the page opens, mouseover . These filters include, . LED TVs are the more advanced technology and have a slightly better picture, but not by much. LCDs are still being made but are slowly being replaced by LEDs.

So, do a little homework, check out models that you like in retail outlets, and then do some online comparison shopping. That way, you’re sure to score a great deal on either an LCD or LED TV.
